A Most Unfortunate Typ-O
Grassroots marketing is absolutely essential for any new novelist. Who's more likely to buy a novel set in San Francisco than those who frequent the bars, restaurants and cafes mentioned in the book?
I got the big idea of pasting up the marketing posters for ANECDOTAL at a dozen hotspots in the City--SF institutions like Mas Sake, the Bus Stop, Canvas Cafe, etc. After much cajoling--some had to "call corporate" to get the OK--I was able to paper some of the highest traffic areas in town with my propaganda.
At my last stop on my weekend of tacking and taping, my buddy Mike Genstil tapped me on the shoulder. "Hey, man, isn't 'ANECDOTAL' misspelled?" I peered up at the beautifully colored, emaculately printed poster--and there it was:
I stared at the poster and just nodded...for about 5 minutes. I was almost too scared to look in my briefcase. Was "Anec0dotal" just on the posters, or on the book cover as well. It can't be. I have 200 copies of the book in my trunk. I have 200 in my garage. "Anecodotal" can't be on the cover, too. I grabbed a copy of the novel--and was relieved beyond words to see a correctly spelled title on the cover.
So, what to do, what to do...I could just leave the posters up. After all, Anecodotal, son of supreme deity Quetzalcoatl, was the Aztec God of Stream of Conciousness Storytelling. But I couldn't have such a typo on display in store windows and above urinals all over the City.
Caked in mud and sweat from an afternoon soccer game, I nonetheless made the decision to hit all of the farflung locations again slicing and dicing and re-taping and re-tacking the imprefect posters. Chalk up another six hours to the guerilla marketing project.
Ah, the life of the rookie novelist ain't all glamorous things like 4 a.m. Kinkos runs and mass mailings to literary agents--you also gotta be ready to cut and paste and rehang posters in bathrooms everywhere.
